The subscription economy was already a rapidly growing segment pre-pandemic. And it has continued to see a rise in adoption over the past year as companies looked to keep pace with rapidly changing market and consumer dynamics. Because of this, forward-looking enterprises began making operational changes so they could better serve their customers’ needs. For many, that resulted in a shift beyond the basic subscription model to a more nuanced, usage-based approach. And this trend is likely to continue. Gartner forecasts that 75% of enterprise software providers will offer a usage-based pricing model in their portfolio by 2025, up from 35% today.
Dennis Wall, chief executive officer of BillingPlatform, says the adoption of usage-based offerings took off in 2020 because of both technological progress and changing demand from customers.
